The United Church of Christ

The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 with the union of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Beginning with the Pilgrims, the Congregational Church was a prime influence in the founding of a free democracy. In 1931, it merged with the General Convocation of Christian Churches, free churches rooted in the American frontier. The Evangelical and Reformed Church was formed in 1933 from two heirs of the Reformed Church in Europe. Each of these traditions was strong in education and social welfare and was committed to the liberty of conscience inherent in the Gospel.
In carrying forth these traditions, the United Church of Christ today is democratically governed, welcoming diversity of viewpoints and variety of backgrounds. People of all denominations are welcomed as we seek to grow through the constructive use of the best in each tradition . Freedom of thought and individual responsibility are still fundamental to our common pursuit of the Christian life.
